Capturing Life On Google My Maps

If you have ever been worried about amnesia, then Google My Maps is a great addition to Google Maps for mapping and sharing your life and your memories. Create your custom worlds, put placemarks on memorable locations, add your memories in the form of descriptions, photos and videos, share it with others, and even view it in Google Earth.

To experiment, I created Karmadude’s World. I started out by placing placemarks on memorable locations on the map, like:

Places I have lived
Opposite Parthas House

Schools I have been to
Toc H Public School

Universities I went to
Birla Institute of Technology

Routes I run
Broadway Running Route

If there was a place I could not find, I turned to Wikimapia to locate it.

These placemarks are just a few examples of what is possible. With so much more to add, and as I add more information, I find My Maps lacking in good organizational features. Search and label features could be some good additions to enhance organization of placemarks. In this example, I have setup a public map, but if you are weary and privacy minded, then you do have the option to create an unlisted map.

Overall, it was fun to create this map, revisit the past, and chronicle it on a Map. Now that it’s there, it’s fun to go back to it, explore places in the past with out moving an inch, and journey through forgotten memories, which will never be forgotten again, well at least for as long as Google is around!

If you create a public map using My Maps, do leave a link in the comments
